For the 2011/12 season, there are 2 main goals: 1) To improve the skill level of all members, and 2) To go to the Ontario Masters Swimming Championships as one of the teams to beat. As such, the emphasis of workouts will be a combination of Stroke work, endurance training and speed work.
The season will be divided into 5 main parts:
- September to Mid November – This portion of the season will be split between work on Skills development as well as a time to build strength and endurance for all swimmers. The expectation is that all members master the skills required to swim well, and that they perform the skills as taught in workout. As the skills are taught members will have the opportunity of practicing them while doing the regular sets during workouts
- Mid November To the end February – Here is where the bulk of the years work will be done. Sets will range from sprint type workouts to long endurance sets. At times drills will be put into the sets so as to allow members to continue to work on the skill taught in the first phase of the year
- March – Speed work and taper – As the club gets closer to the Ontario Masters Swimming championships which run from March 30 to April 1, workouts will switch from being highly focused on endurance work to working on speed, starts, Turns, and racing strategy, leading up to the Provincial swim meet.
- April – May – With our own swim meet on May 6, and the Canadian Masters Swimming Championships happening in Kelowna on the May Long weekend. This period will be a combination of hard training, and meet preparations. These last 2 meets of the swim season are both very important as we obviously want to swim well in our own pool, and anyone who is going to the CMSC meet also want good performances.
- June - This month will be very general, going back to a lot of endurance work as the club gets into open water season and triathlon season. Some stoke work will be done.
